Perhaps thats because, once again, we were denied the really exciting versions. The P90 generation Starlet was a rather dreary small hatchback that failed to generate much excitement amongst British buyers. While collectors get giddy about the VI, especially the Tommy Makinen Edition, it leaves the V looking like a great value option. If you somehow felt your V was not as punchy as a VI, then you could apply a few aftermarket goodies a larger intercooler perhaps as a good start point. It has somewhere in the region of 280bhp, so performance is going to be more than plentiful. The three generations of Mitsubishi Evo from IV to VI share a lot in common, but the Evo V is the rarest of the lot, being produced for just one year between January 1998 and January 1999. The interior is a wonderful place to be, so retro it feels like you're in a time warp! It was one of those cars that visually appeared to age very quickly but in our opinion its sharp nosed retro looks are making a real come back. 104kg lighter and 21.5cm shorter than the more prevalent LWB model this version has the hallmarks of a proper sports car. The short wheel base 300ZX (Or Fairlady Z as its also known in Japan) is an exceptionally rare sight on UK roads. Get some undercover Skyline thrills for a fraction of the cost.

Im particularly fond of the Series 2, which can easily be tweaked to adopt the menacing front end of the R34 Skyline the ultimate example of which is probably the Double Unicorn known to Mighty Car Mod fans.īest of all, Stageas are yet to be subjected to the rapidly rising values affecting Skylines. Find yourself in traffic and the two-pedal system reigns supreme. Sure, youre much more likely to find an automatic transmission, but away from the race track, thats not necessarily such a bind. You get the same RB powerhouse, but in a vehicle thats much more practical for daily use. Sure, this may be little more than a Skyline estate, but thats exactly what makes it a top choice. But, are there some rather more inspired choices that could add a splash of JDM magic to your life? Here are five alternative options that I think you should consider. In an ideal world I'd have a big garage and about ten of the best 90s Japanese cars in it.A few models tend to grab all of the headlines when it comes to Japanese performance cars, with Skylines and Supras being particularly popular. Having said that, I have a lot of time for the NSX, the Z32 in SWB TT form, the Supra A80, the BNR32, SW20. Hence bailing out and getting the Z now 🙂 It's not perfect, and it moves around quite a lot on its suspension, but it's pretty quick and great fun.īasically a dream to drive, shame about the level of maintenance needed and the difficulties getting parts to fix it properly. The car readily shrinks around you, becoming an extension of your body that you can control intuitively. Twice I encountered 996 GT3s on trackdays, and both times there was nothing in it in a straight line between the Porsche and my mildly tuned RX-7.

It's quick in the dry it squats and goes, the sequential turbos giving a great one-two punch for blasting past 45mph dodderers.

I can confirm that the FD3S is excellent to drive the handling balance is beautiful, resisting understeer and settling into a mild drift if you are over-ambitious with your entry speed, like the sixties sports-racers whose lines it draws inspiration from.
#LIST OF 90S JDM CARS PLUS#
I'd actually rate the NSX as my personal #2, but the RX-7 is objectively smaller and lighter, quicker with Stage 1 tuning, and subjectively prettier, plus I guess FR 50/50 weight balance is probably slightly more forgiving. I decided I'd prefer a simple, classic rwd sports car rather than a 4wd a car that starts from uncompromised weight distribution and suspension layout to achieve speed, rather than compromising the basics and then compensating with reactive technology. After reading a lot about them all, I decided on my personal favourite, and bought it seven years ago: A topic near and dear to my heart, the best 90s Japanese cars.
